STATEMENT ON DECOMMISSIONING THE STREETCAR

“After a decade of service, the DC Streetcar ceased operations yesterday evening. While there are several lessons that can be learned from the decommissioning of the Streetcar, my primary focus is ensuring that District residents, particularly those from Wards 5, 6, and 7, still have access to equitable transportation and that we can continue to drive economic growth in the areas the Streetcar serviced.

The Streetcar offered a valuable alternative to bus service, with the added benefits of being both free and accessible for people with mobility issues. It also was a vital driver of economic development of the H Street Corridor and had the potential to continue to spur growth East of the River, if the full vision of the Streetcar had been completed.

I look forward to working with DDOT, WMATA, and all partners in government over the coming months to ensure we are filling gaps in service, meeting the transportation needs of District residents, and continuing to promote economic growth.”
