May 13 Statement on Proposed RFK Transit Improvements

“Over the last year I have had a number of conversations with residents about the RFK Stadium Redevelopment and ways to ensure that it does not affect transportation and traffic in the area. A common theme that emerged from these conversations was a desire for an additional Metro station to expand capacity and alleviate potential adverse impacts on the surrounding communities. While I appreciate the recommendations from WMATA’s transit improvement study to enhance the surrounding transportation infrastructure, unfortunately, it falls short of adequately addressing residents’ concerns.  

The proposed improvements at Stadium-Armory are welcomed; however, I would like to see further conversation about improvements to other nearby metro stations in the ward such as Benning Road, Minnesota Ave, and Deanwood. Each of these stations are equally important to increase capacity and improve east-west connectivity as the area prepares to accommodate an influx of visitors. If we only focus investments on one station, we run the risk of placing unnecessary strain on Stadium-Armory. 

I’m also pleased to see the proposed implementation of the Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit along H Street and Benning Road linking the RFK Campus to Union Station; however, we still need to think about further expansion to facilitate access from the Benning Road Metro and East Capitol.  

I also look forward to gaining greater clarity on how the recommendations align with existing District Department of Transportation projects such as the East Capitol Safety and Mobility Project and the Benning Road Bridge, and learning more about Metro’s proposed operational strategies to manage crowds. 

Over the coming months, I am committed to working with WMATA, my Council colleagues and other partners in government, and community leaders to address these concerns and ensure our evolving transportation infrastructure truly meets the needs of all residents and visitors alike.”
