A Rich History of Resilience and Community

Ward 7 has long been a cornerstone of Washington, DC’s cultural, civic, and social fabric. Located east of the Anacostia River, Ward 7 includes some of the District’s most historic and tight-knit neighborhoods — Deanwood, Hillcrest, Hill East, Marshall Heights, Kingman Park, Fort Dupont, Rosedale, Capitol View, Fairfax Village, and others — each with their own unique identity and deep community roots.

A Community of Strength and Opportunity

Today, Ward 7 is home to more than 80,000 residents who reflect the vibrant diversity and strength of Washington, DC. The Ward encompasses a broad range of housing — from single-family homes to apartment communities — as well as parks, schools, places of worship, and cultural landmarks that reflect the rich history of its people.
Ward 7 is home to:

  • Beautiful natural assets, including Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Fort Dupont Park, the Anacostia River waterfront, and Kingman and Heritage Islands.
  • Historic neighborhoods with deep civic pride and active Advisory Neighborhood Commissions and Civic Associations.
  • Strong community institutions, including houses of worship, community health centers, and youth development organizations.
  • Growing commercial corridors, such as our downtown Minnesota Avenue, Benning Road, and the East River Park area.

Despite significant progress, Ward 7 continues to face pressing challenges around affordable housing, food access, economic mobility, healthcare access, public safety, and equitable investment. But the Ward’s greatest asset remains its people — passionate residents committed to building a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive future.

  • Equitable economic development that brings high-quality jobs, small business support, and commercial revitalization to underserved corridors.
  • Affordable housing preservation and development that allows long-time residents and future generations to live and thrive in the Ward.
  • Expanded healthcare access, behavioral health services, and youth mental health supports.
  • Modernized schools, safe learning environments, and expanded early childhood education opportunities.
  • Robust public safety efforts that combine law enforcement, violence prevention, and community-based interventions.
