SEPTEMBER 5, 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear Neighbors,

Over the past few weeks, the impacts of the federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department have continued to unfold. Since President Trump announced an Executive Order, invoking Section 740 of the Home Rule Act to declare a ‘crime emergency’ and placing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under federal control, federal agents and National Guard troops have been operating across D.C. under federal command. While officials in the administration claim this move is improving public safety, the truth is that D.C.’s crime rates were already declining before this intervention began.

This week, I joined my fellow Councilmembers on Capitol Hill to meet with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. We urged Congress to take action to end this dangerous and undemocratic takeover. We also spoke about the long-term need for D.C. statehood and full autonomy because no other American city would be subject to this kind of interference without local input or consent. I’m proud to stand with my colleagues in defense of Home Rule, and I won’t stop pushing until D.C. governs D.C.

Additionally, last week, my office hosted a “Know Your Rights” town hall. This was a powerful reminder of what community resilience looks like. We had a strong turnout of neighbors, students, and advocates who came together to share concerns, learn their rights, and support one another during this uncertain time. Thank you to everyone who showed up and to our partners who helped make the event such a success. If you weren’t able to make it to the town hall, please follow the link to watch the recording: https://www.youtube.com/live/Qo5r9oP8EQQ?si=vZlJK-Si5ZMBhuQr.

Please see below for resources and information on how to stay safe, including legal hotlines, community safety tips, and how to report incidents. My office remains open and available, please do not hesitate to reach out. We will get through this together and I remain committed to protecting your rights, your voice, and your safety.
