Dear Neighbors,
I want to address the concerning and alarming developments surrounding the federal government’s recent actions in DC. On Monday, August 11th, President Trump announced an Executive Order, invoking Section 740 of the Home Rule Act to declare a ‘crime emergency’ and placing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under federal control.
Over the past week, we’ve witnessed a rapid deployment of federal law enforcement throughout our neighborhoods, particularly affecting our ward. This takeover undermines our home rule and poses serious risks to community trust and safety.
In response, I have been in close communication with ACLU-DC to monitor potential civil rights violations and ensure that residents’ legal protections are upheld. Additionally, I am working directly with the MPD Commanders in the First, Fifth, and Sixth District to continue to be transparent in their operations and urging that they prioritize de-escalation and community safety. I am also working with all schools in the ward in distributing materials to students so they know their rights and can stay safe. Lastly, my office will be hosting a virtual town hall on Thursday, August 28th at 6PM to provide updates on the federalization and to educate residents on their rights. I understand that this moment is frightening for many. I encourage all residents to stay alert, know your rights, and avoid areas where heavy enforcement activity is present. I will continue to work with legal partners and community leaders to ensure access to resources and to support those directly impacted.
