While the District as a whole has seen modest reductions in certain categories of crime, Ward 7 continues to experience disproportionately high levels of violent crime, including gun violence and robberies. These realities have left many residents feeling unsafe in their own neighborhoods. In addition, rates of domestic violence remain among the highest in the city. The root causes of crime in Ward 7 are complex, ranging from lack of economic opportunity and trauma to gaps in service delivery and limited access to violence prevention programs. Public safety efforts must go beyond law enforcement—they must address the systems and conditions that drive crime in the first place.
